La dernière population naturelle des tortues d'Hermann (Testudo h. hermanni) de la péninsule ibérique vit dans le massif des Albères, le chaînon de plus oriental des Pyrénées.

Le Centre de Reproduction des Tortues de l'Albera (CRT), a mis en place des installations qui favorisent la reproduction de ces tortues et permettent ainsi d'augmenter les populations naturelles. Ce centre sert également à étudier les différents aspects de leur biologie et écologie et met en évidence leur besoin de protection et de conservation.

Le CRT est ouvert au public dans le but de sensibiliser le visiteur aux problèmes que cette espèce doit affronter, et au travail mis en oeuvre pour la sauver de l'extinction.

Les droits d'entrée et les diverses donations ou contributions sont intégralement utilisés pour la maintenance du centre et les projets d'étude et de conservation de la tortue d’Hermann.
